Facing the Giants is a story about a losing high school football team and their coach, Grant Taylor. After several years of continuous failing seasons, the school is considering to replace him as head coach and the players’ fathers are collaborating to get him fired.

With no one else to go to, Grant prays and asks God for help. He creates a new coaching philosophy and decides to praise God after each game, win or lose. Eventually, this has created an impact not only to the players but also to the entire school.

This wonderful movie shows the audience what people normally face in real life, especially in the workplace. Even though this film is set with a football theme, one can immediately associate himself with what Grant Taylor has been facing in his life. Issues such as having people who are no longer confident in us, or not having a flourishing career in our workplace, or not being able to have children – all these seem to give us a sense of failure. These are indeed some of the giants we normally face in life and this film inspires us how we can tackle and overcome them if we just lift them all up to God.

This movie subtly reminds us that life can be overwhelming if we take God out of the picture, thinking that we can handle certain things ourselves but eventually we realize, they become issues and problems that we couldn’t face. Even as Christians, we sometimes tend to forget about this simple yet fundamental truth.

We need to keep in mind that being saved is not the end goal but we should continually seek to grow in the Lord, be a humble servant and make an impact around us, whether at home or at work.

Facing the Giants is a great movie that I would highly recommend because it is a good combination of exciting football action, inspiration, and spiritual lessons that we can learn and apply in our daily lives. Facing the Giants was released in Fall 2006 and was the second film produced by Sherwood Pictures. With just a small budget of $100,000, the movie was shown in over 1,000 theaters and grossed a total of over $10,178,000, making the film a huge success.
